In 1861, Lt. Col. William Hoffman was appointed to find a suitable site for the construction of what was expected to be the Union's sole military prison. He settled upon one on the Sandusky Bay - Johnson's Island. Less than 100 miles from Medina County, Confederate officers were held prisoner during the Civil War.
