In 1861, Lt. Col. William Hoffman was appointed to find a suitable site for the construction of what was expected to be the Union's sole military prison.  He settled upon one on the Sandusky Bay - Johnson's Island.  Less than 100 miles from Medina County, Confederate officers were held prisoner during the Civil War.  Hear an eloquent and knowledgeable overview of the prison by Civil War scholar, Roger Pickenpaugh.
